Outdoor Education Advisory Service

Expert advice, monitoring, approval and training for outdoor learning and off-site visits.

The Outdoor Education Advisory (OEA) Service offers expert advice to all Monmouthshire County Council (MCC) schools and other MCC services who run outdoor learning and off-site visits, such as youth service and economy, employment and skills team.

All establishments operating under the OEA Service have a current ‘Outdoor Learning and Off-site Visits policy’ in place and follow National Guidance, which is endorsed by Welsh Government: National Guidance | (oeapng.info)

The Outdoor Education Adviser is a member of the Outdoor Education Advisers’ Panel (OEAP) and current chair of OEAP Cymru. Several training courses are offered to support staff who lead, support and manage outdoor learning and off-site visits.  Courses are available to both Monmouthshire staff and volunteers as well as those seeking training from further afield.  For the range of courses, please see our dropdown options below.

This one-day OEAP accredited training course is for anyone assuming the role of the EVC in their school / establishment.  Candidates will be new to the role and must first be approved by their headteacher or manager.  EVCs should be experienced visit leaders with sufficient status within the establishment to guide the working practice of colleagues leading visits or outdoor learning opportunities.

The course delivers the core messages that develop the skills and expertise of the EVC ensuring that the planning, management and oversight of outdoor learning and off-site visits meets policy and guidance and links to the delivery of high-quality outcomes.

The course represents current good practice, follows the OEAP syllabus, which includes legal responsibilities and risk management and is delivered by an OEAP member.

Times: 9-3.30 p.m.

Format: Face-to-face, classroom and outdoors

This half-day OEAP accredited training course is for anyone who has previously completed the one-day course and needs an update.  This course should be attended every 3 years to remain current as an EVC.

The course will update you on the core messages of outdoor learning and off-site visits planning and management and introduce you to any changes or updates in policy or guidance. The course represents current good practice, follows the OEAP syllabus, which includes legal responsibilities and risk management and is delivered by an OEAP member.

Format: Face-to-face, classroom and outdoors

This one-day accredited course is for those wishing to lead their learners in off-site visit settings.  The course covers key aspects of visit leadership including planning, risk management, evaluation and review in line with current policy and guidance to keep groups safe and deliver high quality outcomes.

The course also delivers practical supervision in a variety of different situations including transport safety, road crossings, managing groups near water and in public access buildings or spaces such as parks or woodland.

Format: Face-to-face, classroom and outdoors

EVOLVE is an online planning and management tool for outdoor learning and off-site visits.  This training is for visit leaders, support staff or volunteers who wish to learn more about how to plan, manage, approve and evaluate their visit using EVOLVE.

The training can be bespoke, but usually involves looking at policy and guidance and where to find supporting documentation and planning tools using EVOLVE. It also guides participants through adding a visit to EVOLVE and getting it approved correctly.

Venue: usually at your school/establishment site

Times: 1.5 hours, delivered as INSET training or a twilight session

Format: Face-to-face or online.  Classroom based

This one-day certified classroom-based course is for staff wishing to organise and take groups skiing or snowboarding.  Refresher training is recommended every 3 years.  The course is delivered by Snowsport Cymru and is NOT for leading or instructing the practical elements of skiing or snowboarding.

The course enables leaders to plan and mange the complexities of a ski course safely and effectively to achieve high quality outdoor learning.

Participants must be at least 21 years of age to attend.

This one-day course is for all teaching practitioners, support staff or volunteers who are new to teaching and learning outdoors and wish to develop their skills to teach the curriculum outdoors.

The course enables participants to fully understand the benefits of teaching outdoors and demystifies what outdoor learning is.  Participants gain a better understanding of risk benefit analysis and practical outdoor skills including resources, games and ideas and to help embed outdoor learning into the curriculum.

Courses can be tailored to suit the primary or secondary curriculum.

Venue: usually at your school/establishment site

Times: 4 hours, delivered as INSET training or two twilight sessions

Format: Face-to-face, classroom and outdoors

This one-day course explores the Outdoor Learning Cards pack, developed by the OEAP to support your curriculum delivery.  There are four main areas to explore: journeying, orienteering, teambuilding and bouldering, leading to high quality outdoor learning experiences.

The course will allow you to experience a range of the activities first hand and help you to understand how you can use them to support your learners.  The cards are easy to use and are aimed at children from Foundation Phase through to Key Stage 3.  They can be used as a basis for developing an outdoor adventurous curriculum, leading to nationally recognised awards such as NNAS or the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme.
