Old Station, Tintern

The Old Station has developed an excellent reputation as one of the area’s top visitor centres, with our recently refurbished railway carriages offering a host of local information and history, as well as an N-gauge model railway, an indoor children’s play area and a video presentation of the history of the Wye Valley Railway and the Circle of Legends.

Enjoy a leisurely stroll along the circular walking route through the beautiful meadows and along the river, enjoying stunning views of the Wye Valley. We are a dog friendly site and welcome dogs in the Tearooms as well as in our picnic area. We politely ask that all dogs are kept on a lead and that you clean up after your dog.

Entry to the Old Station, Tintern is free, but we do ask for a parking fee which comes back to the site for essential maintenance and upgrading.

Facilities

The Old Station Tearoom

The Old Station Tearoom is open Tuesdays to Sundays from 10am until 4pm. Serving delicious locally sourced food and drink, our breakfast menu is available from 10am – 12pm offering freshly cooked bacon and egg and sandwiches.

Our lunch menu is available from 12– 3.30pm offering jacket potatoes, toasties and sandwiches with a wide variety of fillings. You can also enjoy our selection of cakes and sweet treats from Isabel’s Bakehouse and relax with a freshly ground coffee from the Welsh Coffee Co. We have a children’s lunch bag, with sandwich, drink and two snacks and even a selection of dog treats and ice cream.

We also have a small gift shop in the Tearooms, where you’ll find a wonderful selection of local products.

Miniature Railway

Don’t miss the chance to hop aboard the Miniature Railway train, an adventure that awaits you and your little ones for just £1.90 per ride. Tickets are available to purchase in the tearooms on the day of your visit.

We now offer a wheelchair accessible carriage during the week, and by request on weekends. Please note, the carriage can accommodate standard sized wheelchairs, however larger wheelchairs and electric mobility scooters etc are unlikely to fit. Please email oldstationtintern@monmouthshire.gov.uk to enquire and to book for a weekend timeslot.

Our train runs Tuesday to Friday between 1.00pm – 3:00pm and on weekends between 11:00am-12:00pm and 1:00-3:00pm (weather permitted).

*Please note under 10’s must be accompanied by an adult and under 2’s go free.

Play Area

Our outdoor children’s play area offers something for everyone with swings, an outdoor assault course a zip wire and table tennis. You can unleash your creativity in our Mud Kitchen, and create master pieces on our chalk board.

The train carriages have an indoor play space for you to enjoy whatever the weather; with toys, dressing up, colouring and a train set; there’s plenty of fun for children and their grown-ups!

Parking

We have two electric car charging points at the Old Station Tintern. Parking is £2.20 for up to 3 hours or £4.40 for all day. Parking is free for disabled badge holders and motorbikes. The lower overflow car park will be locked from 4:30pm every day.

Transport

Getting Here by Bus – The 69 Service

Make your visit to the Old Station Tintern even easier with the 69 bus service operated by Newport Bus. This convenient route runs between Chepstow, Tintern, and Monmouth, and it drops you right at the top of the drive to the Old Station.

It’s a great way to enjoy the beautiful Wye Valley without the stress of driving or parking. Whether you’re planning a day out exploring heritage, walking trails, or simply relaxing by the river, the 69 bus is a fantastic option.
